Wollongong City Council Website
DescriptionBy 2019, the previous website for Wollongong City Council had been running on a legacy system for almost fifteen years. It was outdated, not responsive, and users frequently reported difficulty finding the information they needed. In my role as project coordinator and lead web developer, I worked with the Council to consult with the community, external digital strategists, and platform providers to redevelop the website from the ground up.
With government websites often criticised for being difficult to use, we took a proactive approach to consult with both the community and external experts. This hands-on engagement helped guide the redevelopment, resulting in a site that was easier to navigate and earned positive feedback from users.
Key improvements in the new website included:
- Implementing responsive web design for optimal viewing across devices.
- Migrating to a new CMS (Matrix by Squiz).
- User-focused content categorised for residents, business owners and tourists.
